Hooping is a fun and creative way to work out and express yourself. An increasingly popular way to exercise, hooping is also a new form of dance and performance art. Tone your core, arms, legs and gluts while getting a cardio work out, learning a new skill, increasing your coordination and having FUN while you do it! Challenge yourself to continue learning the endless amount of tricks and dance moves the hoop has to offer.
You will need:
1. Your hoop (if you don’t have one, I will have loaners in the class)
2. You can do this class barefoot or in a pair of sneakers.
3. Water.

This class is meant for anyone who has taken at least one hoop class through Unity Hoops before and/or has been hooping for around 3-6 months minimum. We will build on basics to take them even further. An emphasis will be put on using polypro hoops – both single and doubles. We will learn short combos at the end of each class that incorporates what we worked on that day.
You will need:
1. Your hoops (you should have your own, but if not I will bring some polypro loaners).
2. You can do this class barefoot or in a pair of sneakers.
3. Water.
Let’s dance! We’ll start with a full body warm up, stretches and some short strength exercises to target the specific muscles used most in belly dancing. Then we’ll go over a different focus of movements each week using our hips, upper body, arms and hands. At the end of each we’ll put those specific movements together into a fun short combo set to music. This class should awaken every part of your body making you feel engaged, aware, opened and empowered!
You will need:
1. We will do some stretches and strength exercises on the floor, so if you prefer using a yoga mat, have one ready.
2. I like to belly dance barefoot.
3. Water.

The Sassy Vintage Showgirl! We will be tapping into our sexy selves in a safe space full of encouragement and fun. Explore yourself, learn about yourself, love yourself and accept yourself for all that you are, right now. We’ll bump ‘n grind, sass it out, pose and play. We’ll go over accessible jazz based movements and some of the classes will involve simple clothing removals – you’ll use what you already have at home! This class is inspired by vintage music and aesthetic.
You will need:
1. We will do stretches and strength exercises on the floor, so if you prefer using a yoga mat, have one ready.
2. You can do this class barefoot or in a pair of character shoes.
3. Water.
4. We might play with some props like gloves, simple removals of clothing that you already have around the house. I will let you know in advance if we plan to do that.

This class is meant for anyone who has taken at least one fire fan class through Unity Hoops before and/or has been spinning fans for around 6 months minimum. We will build on basics to take them even further. An emphasis will be put on tech moves with some fun dancey and flowy moves thrown in too! We will work on short combos at the end of each class that incorporates what we worked on that day.
You will need:
1. Your fans (email me if you need recommendations).
2. You can do this class barefoot or in a pair of sneakers.
3. Water.

    Showgirl Ingenue: ALL LEVELS Burlesque w/ Di’Lovely

    Dance with Di’Lovely in a special 8-part series. Review dance technique and foundations of burlesque, yet take it deeper with interactive exercises to propel a stronger stage presence. Di’Lovely has been teaching various genres of dance for over 20 years, and is the only San Diego soloist to compete multiple times at the Burlesque Hall of Fame. She is excited to share her experience and expert-tease, to cultivate more rising stars in our community.

    8-WEEK SYLLABUS
    1) Intro to basic dance technique and making it work in heels! In this first session, it is important to focus on body awareness, alignment, and grace. Across the floor combinations will be taught, featuring burlesque bump & grind and jazz dance foundations.
    2) Gloves & stocking peels and reveals. Group exercise activities to engage creative thinking and innovative ways to use these burlesque costume staples.
    3) Dancing with props; feather hand fan. Focus on using strength & flexibility of arms and wrists, using the small prop to hide and tease as you strip. A short dance combination will be taught.
    4) Dancing with props; feather boa. Focus on feather boa maintenance, manipulation, and tricks. Practice boas can be provided, for use in a short dance combination.
    5) Stage presence; Eye contact & engagement. Now that the group has been comfortable dancing with each other in the room, it’s time to make a connection with one another, to practice projecting their emotional intentions to a large audience.
    6) Floor work: Focus on flexibility and core strength to properly execute fluid movement on the floor. Across the floor exercises and a short dance combination will be taught.
    7) Classic Burlesque choreography using various elements learned in previous classes. Prop and sample costume pieces TBA.

    An Introduction to Poi Spinning with Christina! A fun and easy way to begin your journey with poi. We will start from the basics, and move from simple moves to simple transitions which will allow you get funky with your flow. I will help lay a foundation for your own unique way of expression, which will allow creativity and growth even after the class ends.
    When graduation day comes around, you’ll be ready to light it up! On the last day of class we will meet at an outdoor location to light up our props. We will go over safety procedure and protocol. Basically everything you need to know about dancing with fire!

    The Eight Fold Path of Contact Staff
    Tuesdays, 7:00 – 8:00pm

    The Eight Fold Path of Contact Staff course is composed of foundational staff moves and supporting movement principles that give students a vocabulary of connectable skills and tricks! Starting with basic planes and footwork, we will build to on-body contact moves, balancing, and The Steve. We’ll get fancy with flare moves, body rolls, and ground work. Everything concludes with an ultimate trick- the Matrix! Each weeks class wraps up with a combination sequence of your new moves, designed to build repertoire and catalyze your knowledge.

    When graduation day comes around, you’ll be ready to light it up! On the last day of class we will meet at an outdoor location to light up our props. We will go over safety procedure and protocol. Basically everything you need to know about dancing with fire!

    A eloquent dance and a fiery tale, come learn the basics of fire fan spinning with me! Devotion to this practice will increase your overall strength and confidence through repetition and muscle memory. Performance based techniques are focused on in this intensive class. My Intention is to build your understanding of Core principles and Knowledge for your future fire spinning endeavors. Through personal motivation, practice, working in groups and Partner work, choreography will come to life by the end of the series.

    Week 1: planes & basic choreography
    Moves: weave; single hand back and forward, body tracing
    Week 2: arms, awareness, symmetry
    Moves: figure 8 weave on different planes, put L and R together
    Week 3: isolations, folds
    Moves: wick isolation – sliding back and forth
    Folding up and down, push/pull side to side
    Week 4: turns + transitions
    Moves: wick isolation turns, behind the back, crossed arms above head, folding up and down and turns.
    Footwork with turns
    Week 5: practice choreography + combinations
    Moves: practice in 2 small groups, one goes left first one goes right first then together – windows and spacing
    Week 6: partner work
    Moves: box, X, 2 partner side to side weave, shiva (line work)
    Week 7: spins / flips
    Moves: buzzsaw front and back, side to side, variations on 2 different planes (horizontal and vertical) dance combination
    Turning wick isolation
    Week 8: Graduation day!
